Though the Indian Independence Act was passed by the UK Parliament in the year 1947 and the Indian Constituent Assembly got the legislative sovereignty from Britishers, it's noted that King George VI continued as the head of the state till India became a complete republican constitution. Along with freedom from the Britishers, our country also got divided into India and Pakistan; riots, causalities and a displacement of roughly 15 million people were seen as a consequence of this.
It was on August 15, 1947 when India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted our national flag at Lahori Gate in Red Fort, Delhi. And since then, it has become a custom for the Indian Prime Minister to hoist the Indian flag on this historical day and address the nation.
